Chicano Studies Summary
A
Summary
There are many things that I learned from this class and
some an extension from what I’ve already known being an enthusiast in Chicano/Latino
studies. For one, I learned about Gloria E. Anzaldúa on Mestiza Consciousness
which is a copy of WEB DuBois’s Double Consciousness but from a Chicano perspective.
I learned about Jose Coello on What does Chicano mean? and Suzanne Oboler’s
The Politics of Labeling. Latino/a Cultural Identities of Self and Other. Coello’s
breakdown of Chicano history learn thought me a lot from the roots of Chicano history,
the meaning behind the term, why the movement started, as well as the art, music,
and poetry that circulated around the movement. Oboler’s book thought me of the
meaning of labels and the pros and cons behind labels.
I
already was familiar with the Zoot Suit Riots and East LA Walkouts from self-learning
and I’ve seen Prejudice and Pride before from my class at San Francisco
State. I’ve also seen the movie Precious Knowledge at the University of San
Francisco with a few classmates of mine from SF State. The producers of that
documentary actually had a special screening for some of the students there. I
learned about Settler Colonialism from Roxanne Dunbar and the article about Intersectionality.
Settler Colonialism article caught my eye above all because of how relevant it
is from what Dunbar was speaking of. It falls into a lot of what we see today. I
agree with the article on Integrating Ethnic Studies in Social Studies
Curriculum by Alyssa Denise Hernández. I think Ethnic Studies is important for
POC to learn about their history and not be left out when they are learning
about history in class. Finally, the poems by Paola Gonzalez & Karla
Gutierrez was moving. As well as the Chicano poem by Lorna Dee Cervantes.
