Chicano Studies Summary

  A Summary               There are many things that I learned from this class and some an extension from what I’ve already known being an enthusiast in Chicano/Latino studies. For one, I learned about Gloria E. Anzaldúa on Mestiza Consciousness which is a copy of WEB DuBois’s Double Consciousness but from a Chicano perspective. I learned about Jose Coello on What does Chicano mean? and Suzanne Oboler’s The Politics of Labeling. Latino/a Cultural Identities of Self and Other. Coello’s breakdown of Chicano history learn thought me a lot from the roots of Chicano history, the meaning behind the term, why the movement started, as well as the art, music, and poetry that circulated around the movement. Oboler’s book thought me of the meaning of labels and the pros and cons behind labels. A History of Violence               Reflecting on a History of Violence by Oscar Martinez is a great book about the history of Central America and its violence nature, how did it start and where do we go from here. The Central American countries of El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala has some of the highest rates of homicides in the world, with El Salvador being the most violent out of the 3 countries. The violence and crushing poverty led to thousands fleeing their homeland every day desperate to enter the United States. The effects of climate change have brought devastating droughts to the region. Moreover, the Obama Administration has deported thousands of illegal aliens who belong to some of these violent gangs back to their homelands. Imperialism

Throughout the class we learned of the many issues, cultures, phenomenon, and innovations brought to the mainland Americas and around the world from Mexico. Much of the class focuses on the struggles and inequalities that was brought onto Chican/o upon the arrival of the conquistadors. Some of the incentives that came from colonialism is the influence of music upon the island and other Latino nations. As Say-Mean-Matter would point out by making the connotation that Latin-America generally is an open wound, constantly bleeding. We all factor in racism, slavery, socio-economic class divisions, displacements, colonialism, imperialism, identity, etc. that the Mexican skirmishes with and has had to in the course of its colonial rule. I would also like to factor in the use of popular culture as a unifying force in Latinx and how it brings people together.

The Politics of America

There are many problems that are present in the United States, and too many to resolve in just a single term or within a couple of terms even. We need solidarity within America, and we need to come together to criminalize the corrupt that suppresses the working people. We have to fight fascism. There is too many infighting between Americans, even within the parties. The Parties are divided and have subdivisions. You have the Democrats, then you have the far left. You have the Republicans, then you have the far right. Among them you have the DINOs and the RINOs, which stands for Democrats In Name Only, and Republicans In Name Only. There is an emptiness within the parties and people use it to their own gain. Among those issues, you have corporations middling within the parties and being the puppet master from afar. MS-13

  Who Is MS-13?   We often hear about MS-13 in the news, at first; some 15 years ago, they were like a cult like gang because of the little information we had on them. Being that the members swore secrecy and not speaking to outsiders. A majority of them were also illegal immigrants so they had to keep under the radar. Sure, the gang did start in Los Angeles, California but they soon got deported back to El Salvador where the gang grew rapidly. Los Angeles was already hailed as a gang capital; so, they decided to move more suburban areas like the Bay Area, Central California, Washington State, and other suburbs throughout the U.S. like Virginia, Long Island, Maryland, and New Jersey. Although you have gangs in that area too, but MS-13 did not have any records with law enforcement there because they had almost zero-to-no history in those areas and they could easily start fresh.
